Hi Team,
Since I was gone last week, I want to thank John for getting our team video, AMSC, posted to UTube. I thought it only appropriate that it be posted to "our blog", as well - its like putting the finishing touch to our blog!
So, here it is:
My only thought, I wished we could have put in the part about the cafeteria lady giving James "hell" for having a tray in the cafeteria - that would have been perfect, oh well!
Take care Team AMSC. Denise Doney

Thursday, April 15th 1:00 Meeting
Note to Team AMSC:
On Monday, our team decided to get together and meet today to review our video, see where John was on the editing of the video. Well, I guess Jess and James forgot to show, but John and Denise were there.
Therefore, Denise and John sat down and reviewed the video, once again. I made a list for John of the things that I knew we still had to get done in order to get to a "finished" product. So, with that being said, John did get the Animal House clip at the end, as per our discussion on Monday with Dr. Rob, but we didn't use the Animal House music at the beginning; John choose something he found on-line. In addition, John put in the information that Dr. Rob requested that we have at the "beginning" and the "end" of our video. John and I almost got all that completed, except we ran out of time, and he will finish getting our names at the end of the video.
Since I will gone next week, I hope that my team members will be in touch with each other and make sure that our finished video does appear on UTube and here at our team blog, AMSC.
Signing Off for Now, Denise

Monday, April 12th - Where we are on our video - AMSC!
Monday, April 12th - we had class today; Dr. Rob was back, Yeah!!!
Our video is completed and edited, but we still need to make a few minor changes and add a clip of music at the beginning and the end. We met with Dr. Rob for a few minutes after class and talked to him about the length of our video - right now it is 2 minutes and 2 seconds. We are going to run a few more seconds longer because we want to add a piece of video clip from Animal House at the end of our video. Our team will meet again on Thursday, April 15th at 1:00 in the Fireside Lounge, next to the cafeteria. By then, we hope that the editing is completed and we will view and comment on our finished video.
Below is our script and our tool set comments about our video, enjoy!

OUR SCRIPT FOR AMSC
P1 = PERSON #1= Erica (student from Champlain)
P2 =PERSON #2 = Denise (Jazzman’s mug)
#3 P3=PERSON = James (tray)
P4=PERSON #4 = John (bike rider)
OPENING SCENE: ONE PERSON at OUR TABLE GROUP HAS A TRAY …meanwhile other persons, P1 and P2, have a look of confusion on their faces because of the TRAY on the table in front of P3 … only three people at the table – P4 will come into scene shortly)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
P1: HEY, WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH THAT TRAY? DIDN’T YOU HEAR, CHAMPLAIN HAS RECENTLY DONE AWAY WITH TRAYS IN ORDER TO CONSERVE WATER AND IT ALSO HELPS CUT DOWN ON FOOD WASTE
P2: YOU DON’T SEE ANY OF US WITH A TRAY, DO YOU?
P3: TODAY, I AM AS HUNGRY AS A BEAR COMING OUT HYBERNATION, SO I WANTED TO LOAD UP ON CARBS, ESPECIALLY THE “LITTLE DEBBIE CAKES” BEFORE MY 5 MILE RUN, BUT I GUESS I DON’T REALLY NEED A TRAY …I WILL JUST MAKE A FEW EXTRA TRIPS TO THE TABLE IF IT MEANS CONSERVING WATER AND NOT WASTING FOOD.
NEXT SCENE: P4 comes running to the table and says,
P4: HEY GUYS, SORRY THAT I AM LATE. I HAVE BEEN BIKING TO CAMPUS TO CUT DOWN ON MY CO2 EMISSIONS. I HAVE TO SAY, PARKING MY BIKE HAS BEEN SWEET; CHAMPLAIN HAS DONE A GREAT JOB OF PLACING BIKE RAKES AROUND THE CAMPUS.
P4: ALSO, I FOUND OUT THROUGH CHRISTINA ERICKSON, THE SUSTAINABILITY COORDINATOR FOR CHAMPLAIN COLLEGE THAT IT OFFERS ACCESS TO SHOWERS FACILITIES IF YOU BIKE TO CAMPUS. THEREFORE, I USED ONE OF THE SHOWERS TODAY AND I MUST SAY, THOSE LOW-FLOW SHOWERHEADS ARE GREAT! I HAD HEARD ABOUT THEM BUT I HADN’T HAD A CHANCE TO TRY ONE YET.
P3: I HAVE TO AGREE, THEY ARE AWESOME … I HAVE THEM IN MY DORM. CAN YOU IMAGINE THE AMOUNT OF WATER THAT IS BEING CONSERVED?
P1: HEY, WHAT’S THAT?
P2: I GOT THIS IN JAZZMAN’S … ISN’T IT GREAT! NORMALLY, A CUP OF COFFEE IS $1.75 BUT IF I USE MY JAZZMAN MUG, IT’S ONLY A BUCK AND IT’S THE GREATEST TASTING COFFEE AROUND. ALSO, I ENJOY THE SMELL OF FRESHLY BREWED COFFEE WHEN I ENTER JAZZMAN’S, BUT BEST OF ALL, JUST THINK OF THE AMOUNT OF TRASH THAT IT CUTS DOWN ON USING A JAZZMAN’S MUG, INSTEAD OF A PAPER CUP EVERYTIME.
P3: ONE OTHER THOUGHT ABOUT THE JAZZMAN’S MUGS, YOU ARE EITHER A COFFEE MUG USER OR A TREE ABUSER!
NEXT SCENE: THE SCREEN GOES BLANK …EVERYONE IS QUIET AND THEN …
P4: WOO …. WHAT JUST HAPPENED?
P3: IT’S THE MOTION SENSOR LIGHTS; WE’VE BEEN SITTING STILL FOR A WHILE SO THEY TURNED OFF. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS WAVE YOUR ARMS AND THE LIGHTS WILL COME BACK ON. CHAMPLAIN HAS BEEN INSTALLING THEM IN THE CLASSROOMS AS WELL AS THE DORMS TO CONSERVE ELECTRICITY.
P3: WELL, I HAVE TO GET GOING; I HAVE MEDIA CLASS WITH DR. ROB.
NEXT SCENE: EVERYONE STANDS UP TO HEAD OUT …P2 needs to be looking at P3… then
P2: SINCE YOU HAVE THE TRAY, WOULD YOU MIND PICKING-UP THE TABLE?
P3: NO PROBLEM, I WILL THROW IT ALL OUT (pause)
……………P1, P2, P4: Stop in their tracks, turn back towards P3, and look at P3 AND P3 says,
P3: WAIT, DID I SAY THROW OUT …. I MEANT RECYCLE AND COMPOST!

In our video, the following tools are used:
BRAIN: Limbic – images and music
TRENDS/SHIFTS:
Epistemological Shift – (from word to image) --- we took our script and put it into an image, our video
Technological Shift – (from analog to digital) ---we watched our video on our personal computers
Personal Shift – (from mass to personal/participatory) --- posted to our AMSC blog, video posted to UTube
PRINCIPLES:
Reality Construction – What stories are not being told? Champlain still has a ways to go in energy conservation and reduce carbon and waste
Production Techniques – What kinds of production techniques do this media use? It uses such production techniques as camera angles, lighting, editing, sound, symbols.
Value Message – What kinds of value messages do this media promote? Messages portrayed in the video are positive and what kinds of sustainability is happening on the Champlain College campus.
Ownership – Who or what owns this media project. Our team, ASMC, owns this media project.
Individual Meaning – What differing meanings might other individuals or groups find. Other individuals or groups might find that Champlain is not doing enough or not soon enough to become more sustainable, a green campus.
Emotional Transfer – What emotions does this media tap. What might we consider if we think more deeply about this media? The emotions that this media taps is humor, positive aspect in regards to becoming a “green” campus, and educational information.
Pacing – What do you observe about this media upon reflection (after showing media multiple times, slowing media down, or stopping media regularly for discussion)? Our team observed the errors made in our video, but we still think it was well produced with what we had to work with as well as the amount of time we had to produce the video. When first shooting our video and then watching it, we could see our mistakes, and we knew what we needed to do in order to correct them. We wanted our video to meet the “three “S” …Short, Simple, Sophisticated.
PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES:
Plain Folks – college students making and being in our video
Big Lie – Champlain does not have motion sensor lights installed in the cafeteria yet
Big Lie – Jazzman’s doesn’t have the greatest tasting coffee around
Bandwagon – everyone is doing it, no longer using a tray
Symbols – Tray, Jazzman Mug, Little Debbie Cakes buried under all the food on the tray
Rhetorical Question – Can you imagine the amount of water that is being conserved?
Hyperbole – Jazzman’s serves the greatest tasting coffee around campus
Either/Or - …you are either a coffee mug user or a tree abuser
Humor – hungry as a bear coming out of hibernation, loading up on Little Debbie cakes, coffee mug user to tree abuser, Animal House Clip
Warm Fuzzies – the little Debbie Cakes and the smell of freshly brewed coffee
Nostalgia – James and Denise remember when the cafeteria used trays daily
Testimonial – Christina Erickson, the Sustainability Coordinator, for Champlain College
Timing – Denise and Erica have a look of disgust on their faces when James comes to the table using a tray, which is packed with food.

Production Day- April 7, 2010
Today we finalized our production of our video. Everyone, in this group, attended this meeting, as did a fellow Champlain Student. (In which we had a release formed signed)
Denise, James, John, and CampChamp student- took roles in part of the filming process. As characters 1, 2, 3, & 4.
Jessie-Filmed the video, and took part in the setting up process.
Denise brought in our finalized script, which was neatly organized in different colors per character.
John also provided means for sound and will be going over the film this weekend, cutting and editing the film to its final format.
James brought in the video camera, and other props used for the short film. Also, he rented a tri-pod which we didn't end up needing, but the effort to be prepared was there!
During our shooting process, James was yelled at momentarily by a women who worked in the cafeteria. She was intimidating him about why he had a tray. It brought about a lot of humor as he joked with her about how he brought it everywhere with him. Haha. She was not joking. It made us realize that Champlain really is about not partaking in using trays, as she antagonized him about how he was going to consume all of the food he was holding. Needless to say, we all had a great laugh.
We had to get a few runs in with collaborating the video around everyone's needs in familiarizing themselves with the script, as well as dealing with unwanted sounds and other malfunctions, as the upset cafeteria lady. :)
It was a lot of fun for us all to get together, and afterwards view a "rough-draft" of what we were able to come up with in the end of our meeting. (As well as consume all of the food James had, so we weren't being wasteful)
After another day of editing, and wrapping up our project, we will be in full force next week, preparing to finish the video project.
Next week we will be posting our script, as well as our POWER TOOLS to our AMSC blogspot.

Production Day #4-Monday, April 5th
Members who attended the meeting: John, James, and JDenise (Jessie was in the hospital - she emailed and texted us to let us know she would not be available
Well, we began our production day meeting at the cafeteria where we plan on shooting our entire video. Our first day of shooting, as planned, did not happen. John and James got the equipment we needed, but we had a problem with the mike. John called a friend who knows his "stuff" and he came to our rescue, but we still did not shoot anything. So, we decided to spend our time talking and writing out the script so it will flow. In addition, we tried to line up students to be in our video; we did get some to agree to be in the video. I know, I will make sure that they sign the "release" form so our butts are covered!
After working on our script, we ran out of time so we agreed to me again on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the cafeteria to begin shooting and editing. At that point, we should have our equipment all set, we will have our script all set, and we hope everyone shows up to the shoot. If not, I am sure we will be able to find some other students who want to be in our video.
We have not changed from our original CONCEPT. As a team, we were very clear on what we wanted to do for our video project. Thinking positive, I hope all goes well on Wednesday!

Production Day #3: Wednesday, March 31st
Today we brainstormed a storyboard and some production ideas for our "green" Champlain Youtube video. Our video will feature a group of students/faculty at Champlain meeting for lunch and discussing the ways the college and Sustain Champlain are working to make Champlain "greener". We created a loose storyboard explaining our 6 methods of making Champlain "green" through the dialogue of the characters, supplemented by quick video clips that reinforce the facts presented throughout the lunchtime conversation. We also looked into using original music from a current Champlain student to have playing (quietly) in the background during breaks in the conversation. We hope to begin filming during our next class period.

Production Day #2, Monday, March 29
Team as follows: John, Jessie, James, and (J)Denise all attended this meeting at 2:00 in our class room.
Roles: John = Editor, Jessie = Director, James = Producer, (J)Denise = Back-Up/Support Crew, otherwise known as "girl friday", Dr. Rob = Executive Producer
For our Sustain Champlain video project, we have created a story about a group of students/faculty at Champlain meeting in the dining hall and discussing the various ways Champlain is making an effort to become more eco-friendly. The video will address certain efforts including: the Jazzman's coffee mug incentive, additional bike racks, low-flow showerheads, carpooling, motion-sensor lighting, and having a tray-less dining hall. The video will show the eco-benefits of having a cafeteria without trays and how they help to make Champlain a “greener” college. We are also considering using a small part from the movie, Animal House, with John Bellucci, where he is in the cafeteria and possibly the music, as well. We will keep Dr. Rob informed of our progress.
Today, we spent our time "shooting" out ideas and talking about what we all would like to see as our end product. We are looking forward to Wednesday's class; we want to hear feedback from Christina as well as our other class mates. That's all for now! Audeamus to Maintain and Sustain Champlain
